This wooden vessel is an early 20th-century brush pot, a container used to hold select calligraphy brushes in a traditional Chinese scholars' studio. Placed alongside the Four Treasures of the scholar - paper, brush, ink, and inkstone - this brush pot would have stirred the imagination and satisfied the scholars' taste for natural forms. The pot is carved from spotted bamboo, a beautifully patterned material often used for making calligraphy brush handles. We love its organic form as a decorative vessel or an unexpected planter for flowers or greenery.
