The figurative sculptures of the Baule peoples of Cote d'Ivoire are recognizable by their strong, gently curving forms and serene composure. This figure of a woman was carved to represent the spirit mate of a young Baule man. The Baule believe that every individual has a mate who dwells in the "other world," carved figures such as this are commissioned to stand-in for the spirit mate. This "other-world woman" (blolo bla) evokes the Baule ideal of feminine beauty, with a rounded face, wide hips, and intricately braided coiffure. Vividly colored with red paint and piercing eyes, this blolo bla figure has a lifelike vitality and a sense of inner calm.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
