Marked by grand proportions and minimalist restraint, this stately table likely graced the study of a Qing-dynasty scholar who would have used its wide expanse for spreading out painted scrolls or works of calligraphy. To cultivate uncluttered and inspiring surroundings, only a few carefully arranged objects would have been placed upon the table, such as a brush pot, inkstone or table screen.

Dated to the mid-19th century, the large table is crafted of elm with bold lines and limited ornamentation, featuring a floating panel top, mortise-and-tenon joinery and straight corner legs ending in hoof feet. Darkened to enhance the original black lacquer, the painting table has a smooth patinated finish with even, black-brown color and subtle antique wear.
