In 18th-century China, a trough would have been a fairly common site in rural areas of Shanxi province. However, this marble trough - with its intricately carved decoration and patterned border - is unusually ornate and likely once sat in the courtyard of a wealthy home. The trough's side is adorned with two round censers carved with branches of plum blossoms, placed on either side of an unfurled scroll of a shan shui, a traditional landscape painting. Everyday items like this would have been used until worn or broken, making this intact, 250-year-old trough a remarkable find. A wonderful addition to the garden, this trough can be filled with lush greenery or striking floral arrangements.
