This show-stopping twelve-panel folding screen exemplifies the beauty and opulence of Qing-dynasty design. Dated to the early 20th century, the grand screen is lavishly decorated on both sides with hand-painted gilt pigments atop a coat of black lacquer. Traces of the underlying red lacquer base are visible where the gilding has faded, adding subtle depth and warmth of color.

On one side is a panoramic landscape depicting a palace courtyard overlooking an idyllic horizon of craggy rocks and calm waters. The fine courtyard is filled with relaxing ladies and young boys at play, a motif for a large family with many successful sons. Spanning across all twelve panels, the scene is beautifully illustrated with fine detail, from the graduated roof tiles of the traditional architecture, to the draped robes of the well-dressed women, to the swaying foliage of the nearby pines and willow trees.

The opposite side is painted with quiet vignette of a phoenix perched beneath a parasol tree. Recognized by its colorful plumage and long tail feathers, the mythical phoenix is known as the “king of birds” and symbolizes prosperity and great blessings. The skies and tree branches overhead are filled with smaller birds, conveying the idiom “hundred birds courting the phoenix,” a motif for peace beneath a wise ruler.

The twelve panels are connected by iron hinges that allow the screen to be displayed free-standing as a room divider or laid flat along a wall as a statement artwork.

Multiple hinges and feet brackets are replacement. Screen does not collapse fully without unlinking hinges.
