Blue and White Garden Baluster Jar

This contemporary lidded baluster jar continues the centuries-old tradition of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain ware. Painted with cobalt pigments for a brilliant blue finish, the jar is densely patterned with trailing vine scrollwork and chrysanthemum blossoms, symbols of autumn and joviality. The sides are painted with garden scenes of an official receiving a vase from a young attendant, perhaps a reference to the visual pun wherein the gift of a "rare vase" implies a blessing of perpetual harmony.
