Chinese nut carving is a traditional craft that dates back as far as the Song dynasty (960-1279). The practice allowed carvers to showcase their skill by creating intricate works on minute surfaces such as walnuts or peach pits.

This polished walnut shell is carved in shallow relief with a decorative pattern known as the eighteen luohan motif. The eighteen luohan are the personal disciples of the Buddha and the guardians of Buddhist adherents.
