This petite chest of drawers is an example of the multi-functional boxes used tabletop in lieu of larger cabinets during the Qing dynasty. Such boxes were used to store cosmetics, incense, documents, and other accessories. Dated to the early 20th century, this ten-drawer chest was likely used in the office of a scholar-official or businessman to organize flat documents and important papers. Recently refinished to a dark brown, the box has a rustic, wabi-sabi charm and would be a perfect storage solution for a home office or art studio.
