With its commanding scale and simple silhouette, this grand Qing-dynasty cabinet offered the perfect canvas for elaborate decoration. The expansive doors are lavishly decorated with gilt scenery depicting palatial courtyard buildings in a lush mountainous landscape. A brilliant gold when first applied, the gilt pigmentation has faded from two centuries of use, revealing the red-brown lacquer underneath. Dated to the early 19th century, the cabinet has a classic square-corner design and was used for storing clothes in lieu of a closet. A large full moon brass lock plate secures the doors, which open to reveal a warm brown interior with three shelves and three shallow drawers.

Moderate repairs to peeling lacquer and splits to front doors.
