A finish of bright red lacquer and hand-painted decoration transform this simple wooden box into a fitting container for treasured objects. Dated to the early 20th century, the rectangular box is painted on the front with a mythical phoenix beside a cluster of peonies, a motif carrying blessings of wealth, rank, and good fortune. The painted character for double happiness furthers the well wishes, a decorative symbol for love and marital bliss.
