In the 1920-30s, Shanghai, China was swept up in the Art Deco design movement. Design, architecture, art, fashion, and furniture were all influenced by this modern movement, permeating every part of life in the bustling, vibrant city. A product of the era, this four-person game table set embodies the harmonious blend of East meets West that came to define Shanghai Art Deco forms.
A rare find from a highly collected period, this incredible Shanghai Deco game table set is crafted of fine rosewood with the mortise-and-tenon joinery of classical Chinese furniture, yet feature geometric details that are distinctly Art Deco. The set includes four chairs and one square game table with an inlaid white marble top, likely used for playing cards or mahjong.
The table has slender corner legs ending in hoof feet and a tiered frame softened by rounded edges and a simply curved apron. The chairs feature striking backs of tiered vertical reeding and domed hemispheres arranged like clusters of pearls. The chair back frames flow continuously into the back legs, linked by straight stretchers to the front legs ending in tiered feet.
