Perfectly proportioned and delightfully ornate, this wooden birdcage was once home to the pet of a Qing-dynasty aristocrat. Dated to the mid-19th century, the square birdcage is carefully assembled of thin rods of dark hardwood and trimmed with fine burlwood inlay in a meander pattern. Three straight perches run the length of the cage at varying heights and the floor is removable for cleaning. The cage is complete with the original owner's accessories, including decorative charms, porcelain cups for water and birdseed, and a shallow double-gourd dish carved from bone. A work of exquisite craftsmanship, this fine birdcage is a wonderful collector's item and a storied sculptural object.
