Carved from a solid block of limestone, this drum-form garden stool began its life in China's Shanxi province in the early 20th century. Ribbed and rounded, the stool suggests a melon, an ancient Chinese symbol of perpetuity. The seat is framed by a ring of auspicious ruyi, symbols of good fortune, and a band of imitation boss-head nails trim the base. Traditionally used as a place to rest one’s feet, a stool like this may have originally been nestled among the greenery of a traditional Chinese garden. We also enjoy it as a small side table indoors or out.
