Outlined by a border of floral and gilt scrollwork, a painted panel of spring flowers adorns the front door of this small storage chest from Shandong province. Depicting a cluster of peony blossoms, symbols of springtime, beauty and love, the graceful flowers are silhouetted in black with subtle highlights around each petal. The surrounding border is painted with black & gold brushwork of florals, butterflies and abstract scrollwork.

A sheer layer of persimmon-orange lacquer has been brushed atop the original, well-worn finish for an even surface with renewed vibrancy and rich visual texture. Placed beside a sofa or flanking a bed, the storied cabinet lives on as a practical solution for today.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
