Wabi Sabi Door Bench

With freeform shape and incredible texture, this low courtyard bench from Shandong province embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy that beauty and integrity can be found within the imperfections of a timeworn object. Reminiscent of heavy door benches used to barricade the gates of traditional Chinese courtyards, the bench is shaped from a salvaged wooden beam, hollowed out from the underside to preserve the organic texture of the wood grain. The log-form seat is elevated by simple chiseled legs and marked by round leg joints and decorative dovetail joinery.
