Centuries ago, a woven reed fisherman’s basket such as this would have been common in rural China as an everyday item, used until it became worn through. This 19th-century example is rich with character, lightly darkened by an aged patina and timeworn texture. The willow and reed weave has worn beautifully with time but remains intact - a true testament to the maker’s skill. Reed banding secures the bentwood rim and a thin layer of hide is stitched onto the underside to reinforce the worn base. Today, we love these woven fishing baskets as unexpected waste bins, laundry hampers or storage containers.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
