This charming cabinet-on-stand dates to the early 20th century and is decorated in the Chinoiserie style with a gilt and polychromed finish. The upper cabinet is decorated to resemble Chinese lacquer cabinetry, the doors and sides embellished with idyllic mountain-and-water landscapes and the drawers with birds and floral sprays. The lacquer has been sculpted to achieve subtle three-dimensionality and is painted in a neutral palette of crème and brown with gilt accents.

Commonly used as bar or drinks chest, the cabinet has ample storage with five front-facing drawers, a side drawer on the table base, and a large interior compartment with a red lacquer interior. Brass drop pulls adorn each drawer and double as removable keys on each of the doors.

The chest sits on an elegant table stand with a waisted apron and thin cabriole legs. The stand has a polychromed gesso finish decorated in low relief with shields, acanthus leaves and botanical scrollwork. The original gilding has faded with time to a subdued, dark brown color with traces of gold.

Minor losses to finish throughout. Subtle crazing to polychrome finish on upper cabinet.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
