Seamlessly constructed and cloaked in black lacquer, this Qing-dynasty cabinet is spectacularly decorated with ornate gilt scenery, depicting traditional palatial courtyard buildings in a mountainous landscape. The grand spectacle is framed by a border of trailing vines, double gourds, and butterflies, symbols of happiness. Below the two doors are three cartouches filled with peaches, pomegranates, and buddha's hands - auspicious fruits offering blessings of longevity, fertility, and wealth. Made with traditional joinery techniques, the cabinet projects harmony and balance, and a single brass latch closure adds a measure of shine.
