Coated inside and out with a rich drip glaze, this early 20th-century jar was originally used for storing foods and condiments in a provincial Chinese kitchen. The wide-mouth jar has a slightly tapered form with rounded shoulders, two double-strapped handles, and a rounded rim at the neck. The thin, dark glaze pools and drips across the textured ceramic body, speckled with imperfections. The beautifully imperfect glaze boasts a near metallic sheen and a range of cool earth tones from brown to green, lending the jar fantastic character.
