A lustrous brown glaze coats the tapered form of this early 20th-century terra cotta kitchen jar, lingering on imperfections and glistening with an iridescent sheen. As evidenced by the glazed interior, this wide-mouth jar was once used in a provincial Chinese kitchen for fermenting foods and condiments. Standing tall with high angular shoulders and a constricted rim, glaze drips down the vases sides. The variable glaze application allows the ripples of its spun manufacture to reveal a wide range of tonal colors, from darker black pigments to a golden brown shimmer. Smooth to the touch, the jar is textured only by the banded surface of the ceramic form, exemplifying the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery.
