Hung on the wall of a Qing-dynasty home in northern China, this remarkably crafted hat rack provided the kind of elevated display that status-enhancing hats demanded. Flanking the central mirror and carved rosewood panel, floral still lifes are brilliantly composed of silk and painted silk appliqué down to each leaf and petal. Graceful hat stands fold out from the frame, joined by four swivel hooks at the bottom for additional hanging. Evocative of a past era, the hat rack elevates a foyer or entryway, providing an elegant rest stop for scarves, bags, or jackets.
