This graceful bamboo basket is an early 20th century flower basket (hanakago) designed especially for ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement. The basket has a squared form that tapers to a round opening and is surmounted by a high, arched handle comprised of thin strips strengthened by a simple wrapping (bo-maki). Beautifully woven of smoked bamboo (susutake), the body of the basket loosely woven with wide bands formed of two or more thin strips for richer texture. Used to contrast and anchor delicate flowers, this ikebana basket is a beautiful example of a traditional Japanese art form.
