Japanese Gilt Traveling Shrine

The simple exterior of even black lacquer that encases this traveling shrine belies the splendor within. The hinged doors open to a gilt interior framing the central figure of a resplendent Bodhisattva. Made in the 19th century, this petite Japanese shrine was likely acquired by a Buddhist follower on a religious pilgrimage. Devotees would often take shrines such as this back to their homes as mementos or donate them to a temple as an expression of religious devotion.
