Trunks and storage chests were the most ubiquitous form of household storage throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. Used to store clothes, linens, kitchen utensils, and other miscellaneous items, trunks were found in every room in the home and were often stacked on top of one another. This mid-18th century example from China's Shanxi province is unusual for its slightly domed top. Its original black lacquer has aged with a beautiful crackle. The ample chest remains in beautiful condition, with intact dark red lacquer on the interior, solid brass fittings, and a fantastic crackled lacquer finish on the exterior.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
