Trunks and storage chests were the most ubiquitous form of household storage throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. Used to store clothes, linens, kitchen utensils, and other miscellaneous items, trunks were found in every room in the home and were often stacked on top of one another. This mid-18th century example from China's Shanxi province is unusual for its slightly domed top. Its original black lacquer has aged with a beautiful crackle. The ample chest remains in beautiful condition, with intact dark red lacquer on the interior, solid brass fittings, and a fantastic crackled lacquer finish on the exterior.
