This small lacquered box is actually a portable opium kit, used to hold all the accessories one might need when smoking opium. The exterior is decorated with brushed lacquer in imitation of tortoise shell, while the interior is cloaked in vibrant cinnabar red and black lacquer.

The lid of the box unfolds into a long tray for placing a pipe and other accessories while smoking opium. The interior is fitted with a removable compartment for storing an oil lamp and opium boxes, two drawers for small tools, and five places for displaying pipe bowls. A fantastic collector's item, this curious box lives on as a storied keepsake of a bygone era.

Minor losses to lacquer finish.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
