This mid-19th century two door cabinet from China's Hebei province is still coated in a lustrous black lacquer finish after nearly two centuries of use. A laborious process, lacquer must be applied slowly, brushed on in long fluid motions. A high-quality finish takes upwards of thirty coats, making a cabinet such as this time-consuming and costly. Once glossy and even, the cabinet's original lacquer is now beautifully aged with a crazed texture and traces of hand-painted decoration. The cabinet has a timeless beauty with clean lines, brass hardware, and rounded moldings that resemble noodles and give the design its unique name.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
