This 19th-century garden stool was carefully carved from a single block of limestone by artisans in the Shanxi region of China. Drum-form stools such as this were frequently used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper class scholars read, wrote, discussed antiques and art and, in general, developed their inner sensibilities. This example is subtly carved with round circles at top and bottom, mimicking nail heads that would have secured a hide top on an actual drum. There is variegated rust color from iron content in the stone.
