A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff bottles.

This late 19th century snuff bottle is hand-carved of shimmering mother-of-pearl, a fine material selected for its soft color and delicate, feminine aesthetic. The petite bottle has an oblong form and is carved in low relief with a portrait of a robed lady on either side. Elevated on a wooden base and complete with its bone snuff spoon, this snuff bottle makes for a delightful accent to a bookcase or the beginning of a lifelong collection.
