This cast iron sculpture is an architectural finial that originally topped a Qing-dynasty building in northern China. The decorative fragment depicts two auspicious qilin, mythical Chinese creatures thought to bring luck and protection. Qilin are often depicted with lion-like features, though with the head of a dragon, hooves of a deer, and full, feathery tails. Divine and peaceful creatures, qilin are believed to be benevolent protectors of those with good intentions. These two qilin are shown playing with an embroidered ball, a motif comparable to dragons fighting over the flaming pearl of supremacy.
