This early 20th-century ceramic stool honors tradition with a drum-form shape and folk painted decoration. The earthenware drum is sculpted with gently swelling sides and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth-tones in a style characteristic of cizhou ware.

Loosely brushed in warm brown underglaze atop a creme-white slip base, one side of the drum is painted with chrysanthemum flowers, symbols of autumn and longevity, and the other with a pair of magpies amid plum blossoms, a motif for double happiness.

A pattern of dots ringing the top imitates nails used to stretch a hide on an actual drum, and lion-shaped handgrips stamped into the sides imitate metal drop handles. Traditionally used as a place to rest one’s feet, ceramic drum stools are ideal today as side tables, pedestals or garden seating.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
