Pair of Lattice Screen Panels

A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. Linked by alternating hinges, lattice panels become a versatile way to partition sparsely furnished interiors into areas for eating, socializing, and resting. This 19th-century two-panel folding screen features expansive lattice windows with a geometric pattern and a central cross motif. Crafted of northern elm (yumu), the simple lattice panels have aged beautifully from a century of use, with warm coloring and smooth textures.
