These reclining lion dogs, also known as shizi, were hand-carved from limestone in northern China over two centuries ago. These mythical guardians symbolize strength and power and were once mounted as finials on a stone bridge or gate to prevent malicious spirits from crossing. Today they can be appreciated as time-honored sculptures and used as bookends, doorstops, or garden ornaments.
