These unusual lacquered vases are sculpted in a traditional Chinese vase shape that dates back as far as the early bronze age. Known as a Gu vase, 'beaker' vase or 'flared' vase, the unique form originated as a ritual bronze wine vessel and is characterized by flared ends and a bulbous middle.

A variation of this classic form, these vases are comprised of dark lacquer atop a wooden substrate and feature angular shoulders, square ends, and decorative side handles. The monochrome lacquer finish is patterned in low relief with geometric scrollwork and floral motifs. At once traditional and modern, we love these vases for their elegant silhouettes and richly aged texture.
