These 19th-century column supports likely figured into the grand and imposing surroundings of a Qing-dynasty courtyard, flanking the entryway with its protective presence. Carved from limestone, the columns are composed of two sections: a drum-shaped top intricately patterned in low relief and a tiered architectural bottom portion topped with spirited fu dogs. Aligned together or interspersed among plantings, these grand carvings would make an impressive addition to a walkway or garden.
