This curious 19th-century spindleback chair defies traditional Qing-dynasty forms. A collection of moments from previous eras, the chair incorporates elements drawn from Chinese carpentry ideals spanning back as far as the 16th century. The clean lines of the spindleback form are interrupted by a carved apron on the chair's front, ornately cusped to resemble a Ming-dynasty waisted stool. The back of the armchair breaks convention with unusual height, stabilized by back slats spaced abnormally far apart. It appears that at different moments in its life, the chair was lacquered with bright blues and reds to amplify its fantastic character. Constructed with care and lovingly worn, the armchair is nevertheless a celebration of traditional forms, uniting disparate motifs in endearing harmony.
