This early 20th century porcelain vase is sculpted to a classic Chinese phoenix-tail form and decorated with persimmon-orange enamel and several cartouche paintings of picturesque scenes. Hand-painted with pastel enamels in the famille rose manner, each vignette depicts boys at play in a courtyard garden, chaperoned by a young woman and holding various symbolic objects, such as the lotus flower or the reed organ (sheng). These motifs express a blessing of many sons and prosperity to the entire family. Traces of gilt linework outline each cartouche and decorate the surrounding orange field with elegant bamboo leaves, now faded from time.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
