During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

Contrasted by a cool white field, this early 20th century round ginger jar is decorated in pastel enamels with a design of fine vases and censers set upon plant stands and filled with flowers, including chrysanthemums, plum blossoms and peonies. A common motif on Chinese ceramics and textiles, this vignette of precious objects is known as "Hundred Treasures" or "Hundred Antiques," and celebrates beauty and craftsmanship in the fine arts. The opposite side is brushed with calligraphic poetry and the underside is stamped with the reign mark of the Tongzhi Emperor (1862-1874).
