A petite ginger jar from the early 20th century with a squat, round shape and enameled decoration of a mythical fu lion. Also known as shizi or foo dogs, fu lions are believed to be benevolent protectors against malevolent spirits. Hand-painted with simple linework and stippled shading, the lion is rendered in black enamel atop a cool white field, surrounded by abstract flourishes and decorative calligraphy. Stamped with the reign mark of the Tongzhi Emperor (1862-1874).
