Coiled Pickling Jar

Originally used for fermenting rice or sorghum into vinegar, this earthenware vessel from the early 20th century is coated inside and out with a thick, dark glaze. The rich brown glaze sheets and pools over the jar's textured sides, lingering on each imperfection for a speckled, glossy finish.

The tapered jar features a narrowed base, rounded shoulders, and a constrained neck flanked by simple strap handles. Subtle ridges along the sides suggest the jar was fashioned by coiling flattened ropes to achieve the desired shape.
