This petite pinewood vessel is an early 20th century mortar once used daily in a provincial northern Chinese kitchen to grind herbs and spices. The rustic container was hand-turned to an hourglass form and has a simple pattern of incised and raised horizontal bands. We love it in the gallery filled with sand to burn palo santo or incense.
