The folk paintings on this cabinet depict 19th century Chinese provincial life-—our favorite is the courtyard scene with a young boy carrying a burden bar that balances two buckets of water. Paintings like this offer a glimpse at architecture, dress and customs of the time. The painted panels were originally stationary but now open as doors.
