This low, four-leg stool is actually a headrest used atop a daybed or mat to support the head while sleeping, reclining, or smoking opium. As an opium accessory, rigid headrests such as this allowed an inebriated smoker to to more comfortably lie on their side and maintain a view of their opium lamp.

This example recreates traditional forms with a splayed leg design that supports a gently curved top rest. The headrest is cloaked in a red-and-black lacquer finish for a pop of bright color and crackled texture.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
