This Chinese altar table from the early 19th century exemplifies the refined forms of Ming and Qing dynasty furniture. The table has a classic recessed-leg design, featuring a flat, floating-panel top, simple spandrels and inset round legs linked by double stretchers. A multipurpose design, such tables were used throughout the home as domestic altars for ancestor worship or as work tables for painting and viewing calligraphy.

Bare of ornamentation, the console table has an understated presence and is appreciated for its simple silhouette and the natural beauty of northern elm (yumu). The original dark lacquer finish has faded with time, well worn by years of use for a soft texture that highlights the wood beneath.
