These early 20th-century tall-back chairs from Southern China are built from spotted bamboo and woven reed. Because the top rail resembles the yoke for an ox, chairs of this style were often referred to as "yokeback" chairs. Creating furniture from bamboo was a traditional Chinese art form in itself, requiring carpenters with specialized skills, talents, and training to bend, form, and tie the extraordinarily strong yet lightweight material.
