This grand painting table from the mid-18th century exemplifies the timeless elegance of classical Chinese furniture forms. With its long surface ideal for contemplating scrolls and paintings, the table likely once resided in a scholar's studio, specially selected for its balanced proportions and refined simplicity. Crafted of northern elm (yumu) with traditional joinery, the table has a square corner design with a floating panel top, straight legs ending in hoof feet and gracefully arched giant's arm braces. The original dark lacquer finish has faded over centuries of use, revealing the light brown color and soft texture of elm underneath.
