This 19th-century column base likely figured into the grand and imposing surroundings of a Qing-dynasty courtyard, flanking the entryway with its protective presence. Carved from limestone, the column base is topped with a drum-like structure patterned with nail heads carved in low relief. The fluid, curving form of the upper portion is balanced by the angular, octagonal lower half, adorned with inset panels and decorative flourishes. Interspersed among garden plantings or used indoors as a pedestal, these grand carvings would make an impressive addition to the home.
