Once used on a provincial Chinese farm to hold water or animal feed, this early 20th-century stone trough is celebrated today for its organic form and rustic authenticity. Hand-carved from solid limestone, the trough has a rectangular form with slightly tapered sides and an oval interior basin. The chiseled surface has weathered with time, developing subtle asymmetry and color variations. Drilled with a central drainage hole, the small trough can be used as a planter for lush greenery or florals, a wonderful addition to a garden or patio.

Trough has been drilled with a drainage hole.

Stone Trough Sinks

A stone sink is a unique way to embrace nature in design. Over the years, we’ve worked with clients who have incorporated troughs as sink basins in sleek Chicago apartments to outdoor garden areas in rustic lake houses in California. The stone sinks can “float” on a wall or be integrated into a counter.

We became even more enamored with traditional troughs as sinks after seeing Tramuntana Farmhouse, the idyllic home of Leigh and Pille Morgan on the Balearic island of Mallorca. The trough sinks complement the Spanish stone used throughout the home, while creating sculptural focal points in each space.
