Seated cross-legged in a posture of perfect composure, this expressive ceramic figure represents the likeness of a chief or prominent figure among the Yombe people of the Bakongo region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A traditional fitted headdress and armlets identify him as a high-ranking individual, while the oversized head and expressive facial features exemplify the chief’s thoughtful and intelligent nature. Likely displayed in a shrine, the figure commemorates the individual and personifies his power to protect, intercede, and enact good will on behalf of the clan. We love its joyful presence, sensing an affinity between the figure’s exuberant expression and the joyful countenance of a Chinese Laughing Buddha.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
