This reclining elephant was crafted in Thailand in the mid-20th century and has a carved wooden substrate with a polychrome finish. The elephant is depicted lying on its knees with its trunk in the air, a posture to allow a rider to mount its back. The saddle and headdress are colored with red, green, and blue pigments and the grey body is patterned by etched lines that imitate the folds of an elephant's skin. With its muted colors and weathered texture, this wooden elephant is a lovely decorative addition to the home.
